The kitchen is the heart of the home, so they say, and the cabinetry plays a big role in setting the tone for the space. Over time, cabinets can look tired, worn, outdated, or no longer match your style. This is where refinishing becomes a great option. Repainting your old cabinets is a cost-effective way to revitalize your kitchen without the expense and disruption of a full remodel! If you have thought of refinishing your kitchen cabinets, you probably have questions about the process, timeline, and what to expect.

To help you feel more confident and informed, we’ve compiled a series of answers to some of the most common questions we get. From the duration of the job to the care and longevity of the final product, we’ve got you covered!

Before the Project

How do I schedule an estimate?

Scheduling an estimate is simple! Just give us a call or fill out our online contact form to set up a time that works best. During the estimate, we’ll visit your home to assess the condition of your cabinets, discuss your design preferences, and provide a detailed, written estimate that will be sent to you via email. This ensures you know exactly what to expect in terms of cost, timeline, and scope of work.

What happens during the estimate meeting?

During the walk-through, we’ll carefully evaluate your cabinetry condition and kitchen layout. We will discuss your vision, including color options, finishes, and any additional updates like hardware changes. We will also address any initial concerns or questions you may have. This visit allows us to give you a clear and accurate estimate for the project, tailored specifically to your kitchen refinishing project.

Can I get an estimate over the phone or virtually?

If you’re looking for a general price range before committing to an in-person consultation, we are happy to give you a ballpark based on photos and measurements. We can then schedule an in-person visit and provide you with an accurate written painting estimate. While we can offer a rough estimate based on photos, we highly recommend an in-person estimate for the most accurate pricing and assessment. Cabinetry refinishing is highly customized, and an on-site visit allows us to evaluate the condition of your cabinets and understand the specifics of your space.

I’m planning to replace appliances, backsplash, or countertops. When should I schedule the cabinetry refinishing?

We recommend all other works including but not limited to the countertop, backsplash, electrical, etc. be done before painting the cabinets. This prevents any potential damage to your newly refinished cabinets during the installation process of the other items. Once the other work is completed, we can start our cabinet prep and painting. Don’t worry, your new appliances and/or countertop and backsplash will be completely masked and protected by us.

What can I do to prepare for the project?

We often tell customers this is their chance to reorganize and declutter their kitchen cabinets. We ask you to empty the cabinets and drawers and remove all items. Additionally, providing clear access to the workspace is helpful. We’ll take care of protecting the surrounding areas during the refinishing process.

The Process

Does Paint Track spray or hand-brush the cabinetry?

We exclusively spray the cabinets when refinishing because we use a premium-quality, two-component (2K) waterborne lacquer that requires a spray finish for optimal results. Spraying ensures a smooth, even coating with no brush marks, providing a factory-like finish. The 2K lacquer is extremely durable and designed for cabinetry, giving your cabinets a professional-grade finish that will hold up beautifully over time.

Who will be painting my cabinets?

Your cabinets will be refinished by our very own skilled and experienced team. Each team member is trained to follow our process from cleaning and degreasing to sanding and finishing to deliver a high-quality finish, ensuring your cabinets will be handled with the utmost care and expertise.

How long does the job take?

The duration of the job depends on the scope and complexity of the work. Typically, a cabinetry refinishing project can take about 5-6 days. This allows time for proper preparation, refinishing, drying, and re-installation of the doors and drawers.

Where would the work take place?

We do all of our cabinetry refinishing work on-site. Since the cabinet boxes cannot be removed, it is better and more efficient for us to complete the entire work on-site. That way we mask the surroundings and spray the boxes and the doors, ensuring the same quality finish. We use a two-component lacquer that requires precise mixing for each batch, making it easier to apply on-site.

Will the insides of the boxes be painted?

Generally, our refinishing services focus on the exterior of the cabinetry. However, exposed areas, such as open shelves, or cabinets with glass doors, will be painted in and out. Both sides of the doors, drawers, and the complete exterior of the boxes will be painted.

Can we change hinges or hardware?

Yes, we can assist with changing hinges or hardware during the refinishing process. We even offer to fill old holes and drill new ones if you pick new knobs and pulls. It’s a great time to update the look of your cabinetry by selecting new hardware that complements the refreshed finish. We request that the customer purchases their knobs and pulls prior to the project so we can determine placements before the project commences. As for hinges, may of our customers opt to upgrade to soft closing, whic we provide at an additional cost, so long as we can find the same model as the existing hinges.

The Results

How long do the results last?

With proper care and maintenance, refinished cabinets can last as long as brand-new cabinets if not more! We use high-quality materials that are designed to withstand daily use, ensuring a long-lasting finish. The lacquer we use can last longer than factory-finished cabinetry because it is a two-component specialty cabinet paint that most cabinet shops don’t have the patience and expertise to work with.

Is refinishing cost-effective compared to a remodel?

Yes, refinishing is significantly more cost-effective than a full cabinet replacement or remodel. Refinishing allows you to give your cabinets a fresh, updated look without the expense and time commitment of a full renovation.

How do I maintain my newly refinished cabinetry, such as routine cleaning?

Maintenance is easy! We recommend using a damp soft cloth and gentle cleaners, such as dish soap to wipe down the surfaces when needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or scrub brush. Proper maintenance can keep your cabinets looking great for years to come.
