Cabinet Refinishing Done Right

How to Ensure a Lasting Finish After Others Mistakes

Our clients in Garrison, NY were interested in our cabinet refinishing. We would be the third contractor to refinish their cabinets in three years. Whatever the last contractors had done had not been working and the paint was easily peeling off the cabinets (seen in the photo below). Our clients had to replace all of the doors as a result of the previous poor work. We knew that there was no space to make any mistakes. This was no problem using our quality prep and lacquer refinishing.

The paint from the previous refinish was not adhering to the cabinets. This left the home owners in a frustrating situation for the third time.

Our Prep

Our process is time consuming, but that’s what it takes to create a perfect job. We first start with cleaning all the cabinets with commercial grade cleaners and degreasers. Then we move to covering all the floors, countertops, and appliances with proper masking paper and plastic. We make sure that only areas that will be refinished are exposed. At the same time, we create a spray booth to spray all of our cabinets on site and have them dry in a separate section with a drying rack. We thoroughly sand all of the cabinets to remove the loose paint followed by cleaning to remove all of the dust. This set up usually takes between 2-3 days depending on how large the kitchen is. Quality prep leads to quality cabinet refinishing.

Refinishing Coats

After all of the prep is done we begin spraying the primer. When the primer is finished, we use our waterborne European lacquer and begin the final coats of the cabinet finish.  Waterborne products are fantastic when it comes to quality and durability. We use Waterborne products in residential settings without concerns of harsh fumes from the paint. On the other hand, using oil products creates a stench that could take days to dissipate.

After all of the cabinets are dry, we reattach all of the hardware and reinstall all of the doors.  Seeing the difference will blow you away.

Durability

Many customers ask us “will this chip?” when it comes to our cabinet refinishing. The simple answer is no, the cabinets will not chip or peel. That is why we take extra measures in our prep to ensure proper adhesion and bonding of our primer coat to the surface and use high quality European waterborne lacquer when spraying our cabinets. In doing this, there is no reason for paint failure under normal wear and tear. When it comes to normal wear and tear on your cabinets, the paint we use will hold up like a champion. In the case of banging objects against the cabinetry, that may be different. Our finishes, like every other paint, is not indestructible. If you damage your cabinets, it will most likely also damage your paint. Our refinished cabinets are as durable as brand new shop finished cabinets, if not better.
