All About Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing

Looking to do some kitchen cabinet refinishing? Most of the kitchen cabinets installed in the past few decades were stained maple, cherry, and oak wood that had clear finish coat on them. As the cabinets get used some of the wood gets damaged by pots and pans and utensils which creates a dent on the surface. Furthermore, the clear coat and stained wood gets chipped, and the finish comes off. For the most part, in natural color cabinets this is not as noticeable as painted cabinets. However, if the same thing happens to a painted surface, it will be more visible.

The good news is that it can be touched up. Paint Track has professionally re-finished hundreds of kitchen cabinets in the last few years. The reason being that most people don’t like the maple or cherry color cabinets. Customers are looking for a more modern look in their desired colors. We have spent many hundreds of hours testing and spraying new cabinets paint. This was to find the absolute best for refinishing the kitchen and built-in cabinets. We have it down to science and we know that our system and process is way superior to most finishes applied on new cabinets in the cabinet shops.

Most cabinet shops use a conversion varnish paint which provides a good finish, but it fails when it gets wet overtime. However, the paints we use dries to a very hard finish and can withstand moisture and impact. We use a two-part European cabinets paint that is not so forgiving and that’s the main reason most cabinet shops avoid using them. We use 2K poly cabinet finishes which is Poly Finishing. Kitchen cabinet refinishing is usually a Monday to Friday process that starts with the customer emptying the cabinets.

Following are the general steps we take to prepare and professionally refinish kitchen and built-in cabinets:

– We come in and close off the room, start covering, and masking every surface we are not supposed to get paint on. That is floors, countertops, backsplash, interior of the cabinets, etc.
– Mask and cover up the inside of cabinets to block paint overspray.
– Remove all hardware + remove doors/drawers. Clean and degrease all surfaces with a cleaning/degreasing solution to remove all grease, grime, etc.
– Lightly scuff sand doors/drawers/boxes and all surfaces and wipe them clean.
– If applicable patch existing knob holes and drill new holes for new pull provided by the client.                                                            -Apply/Spray one coat of stain-blocking primer (if applicable) or one coat of premium European primer using fine finish sprayers and tips for the best smooth finish.
– Apply/Spray two coats of 2K Ploy/Premium European Cabinet Finish in the color of your choice.
– Remove all masking, clean up and reinstall doors, drawers, hardware, and knobs.
