First, to get our terms clear, Buon Fresco is the ancient painting method that flourished in Renaissance Italy. The word fresco comes from the Italian word affresco which is from Latin, for “fresh”. Buon Fresco is a method of painting directly onto fresh plaster with pure pigments. The pigment becomes locked under the calcium carbonate skin of the plaster as it cures. Then it creates an extraordinarily long-lasting painting with colors that remain vibrant over centuries.

Whereas, Faux Fresco is a modern painting technique that gives the appearance of an aged fresco using contemporary paint and plaster products. Today’s decorative fresco painter can make entire walls look like ancient, weather-beaten stone surfaces; and they can create nature motif murals that look like precious heirlooms. There is no limit to what imaginative painters and homeowners can come up with!

Whether you want a cozy, Italian-style fresco wall in the dining area next to your wine cellar, a powder room adorned with antique looking murals of birds and trees, or an old-world bedroom right out of Rome, a faux fresco painter can take you there with just some expert painting techniques.
